As May blossoms and the festive spirit of Cinco de Mayo is in the air, our thoughts for future travel plans turn to the vibrant land of Mexico. More than just a day for celebration and a few margaritas, Cinco de Mayo offers the fantastic opportunity to delve into the rich history, captivating culture, and breathtaking landscapes that make Mexico a truly special destination.

Cinco de Mayo, observed annually on May 5th, commemorates the Mexican army's surprising victory over the French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Beyond the celebrations, Mexico is a country with a lot to offer travelers. You can explore ancient ruins, relax on beautiful beaches, or visit lively cities with a rich history. The culture is vibrant, with colorful traditions and delicious food. Whether you're looking for adventure, relaxation, or to learn something new, Mexico has many interesting places to visit. Let's take a look at some of the best destinations this country has to offer:

Los Cabos: An upcoming popular destination, Los Cabos is a stunning mix of dramatic cliff-like landscapes and lush beaches, perfect for both relaxing in the sun and squeezing in some adventure. Located at the tip of the Baja California Peninsula, Los Cabos is an iconic living landscape, and is even the location where the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortés meet. During the months of December through April, you can even see pods of whales migrating through the ocean in Los Cabos. When visiting Los Cabos, one of our favorite properties to stay at is Esperanza, Auberge Resorts Collection, an iconic escape right on the coastline. A destination that offers surfing with locals, driving your own desert racing car, horseback riding along the coastline, and even visiting a whale sanctuary, Los Cabos truly has something for everyone.

Guadalajara

As the second-largest city in Mexico, Guadalajara is a melting pot of culture, tradition, and dozens of unique neighborhoods to explore for an authentic and unforgettable experience. Known as the birthplace of tequila and mariachi, you’re sure to hear live music around every corner. The city of Guadalajara also boasts stunning colonial architecture, particularly around the historic city center. You can explore grand cathedrals, stroll through busy plazas in the sunshine, and immerse yourself in the bustling arts scene. Take a look Inside Cerámica Suro, the Surrealist Studio Shaping Guadalajara’s Art Scene. With a warm atmosphere and deep roots, Guadalajara is a perfect place to get a glimpse into the heart of Mexico.

Isla Holbox

A serene island located off of the Yucatan Peninsula, Isla Holbox offers a peaceful tropical oasis away from the mainland's hustle. An island that is completely car-free, Isla Holbox is a destination known for its laid back atmosphere, pristine beaches, and shallow turquoise waters. Visitors can unwind in beachfront accommodations, swim with whale sharks (seasonally), and enjoy its vibrant murals and bohemian charm. This destination is also one of the few places on the globe where visitors can see the breathtaking bioluminescent beaches, and is known as being one of the best. Perfect for a slow and rejuvenating getaway, Isla Holbox provides a refreshing blend of natural beauty, relaxed island living, and complete tranquility.

Bacalar, Mexico

Located in the southern Mexican Caribbean, Bacalar is a stunning destination perfect for those who love the ocean. Known for its Lagoon of Seven Colors and crystal clear waters, you’re sure to find the perfect blend of tropical relaxation and adventure here. The town of Bacalar itself exudes a relaxed, bohemian vibe, with charming restaurants, eco-friendly accommodations, and the historic San Felipe Fort. Visitors can explore the nearby cenotes, Mayan ruins, and enjoy the area's natural beauty, making Bacalar a haven for those seeking tranquility and connection with nature.

Oaxaca

A captivating destination that offers a rich tapestry of cultural experiences, Oaxaca is a spot in Mexico that you won’t want to miss. The vibrant city is renowned for its indigenous roots, stunning colonial architecture, and thriving arts scene. You can explore ancient Zapotec ruins like Monte Albán, wander through colorful markets filled with handcrafted goods, and savor the iconic and complex flavors of Oaxacan cuisine, a true gastronomic delight. One of our favorite ways to experience true Oaxaca is with a culinary tour, “Food, in fact, is Oaxaca’s primary draw: Assortments of more than 500 local herbs help flavor the region’s famous moles, and 60 agave varieties infuse all that mezcal.” says Virtuoso in their article, ‘A Culinary Tour of Oaxaca with Enrique Olvera’. From the delicious food you’ll find here, to the lively festivals, to the warm and welcoming people, Oaxaca offers a complete immersive journey into the heart of Mexico and is surely one of our favorites.

So, this Cinco de Mayo, and beyond, we invite you to look beyond the familiar beach vacation and discover the incredible depth and diversity that Mexico has to offer. From the dramatic landscapes of Los Cabos to the cultural heart of Guadalajara, the tranquil shores of Isla Holbox, the vibrant hues of Bacalar's lagoon, and the rich traditions of Oaxaca, each destination unveils a unique facet of this captivating country. Let us help you craft an itinerary that delves into Mexico's fascinating history, immerses you in its vibrant culture, and creates memories that extend far beyond the festive celebrations.
