Autumn offers a unique opportunity for hiking and biking, providing a more comfortable and invigorating experience than the peak of summer. The temperatures are refreshingly cool, and the summer crowds have thinned, allowing for a sense of peace and serenity on the trails. This tranquil atmosphere is complemented by the breathtaking scenery of fall foliage, and for those who prefer their adventures without summer's pests, the cooler weather brings a welcome escape.

New England’s Charming Trails

For the quintessential autumn experience, the rolling hills of New England are unmatched. This region’s famous foliage provides a stunning backdrop for any outdoor activity.

Hiking in New Hampshire: The White Mountains are a hiker's paradise. Trails like the Franconia Ridge Loop offer challenging ascents that reward you with breathtaking, panoramic views of a stunning fall landscape.

Biking in Vermont: The Lamoille Valley Rail Trail is a fantastic option for cyclists of all levels. This scenic, 93-mile path follows a historic railway line, offering a flat, easy ride through picturesque covered bridges, charming small towns, and vibrant farm country. It’s the perfect way to soak in the autumn beauty at a leisurely pace.

The Majestic Canadian Rockies

As fall settles in, the Canadian Rockies offer a unique setting with fewer crowds and a distinct golden glow. Fall is also a time to see wildlife as elk begin to descend from the alpine regions, and the elk mating season is in full swing from mid-September to mid-October.

Hiking in Banff: The trails around Lake Louise and Moraine Lake are legendary. In late September, you can witness the rare and beautiful sight of golden larch trees, whose needles turn a brilliant yellow before they drop. Paired with the iconic turquoise lakes and snow-dusted peaks, it's a view that feels almost surreal.

Biking the Legacy Trail: This paved path connects the towns of Banff and Canmore, offering a 22-kilometer ride with stunning mountain views. It's an accessible and safe way to explore the national park's scenery, providing a memorable ride without the rugged terrain.

The Serene Smoky Mountains

The Great Smoky Mountains offer a fall experience rich with diverse foliage and a unique, misty charm that can’t be found anywhere else and is perfect for getting outdoors during the cooler time of year.

Hiking in North Carolina/Tennessee: The Alum Cave Trail to Mount LeConte is a must-do. This trail takes you through a variety of ecosystems, from forest paths to rocky outcrops, and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains blanketed in fall colors. The cooler temperatures are ideal for this rewarding hike.

Biking in Cades Cove: The Cades Cove Loop is a popular 11-mile paved road that is often closed to vehicles on certain days, making it perfect for cyclists. You'll glide through a scenic valley, past historic buildings, and have a high chance of spotting deer, black bears, and other wildlife.

The Dramatic Pacific Northwest

For an autumn journey filled with powerful rivers, towering cliffs, and spectacular waterfalls, the Pacific Northwest is in a league of its own.

Hiking in Oregon: The trails in the Columbia River Gorge are legendary. A hike to Multnomah Falls offers a classic experience, but countless other trails lead to hidden waterfalls and stunning viewpoints, all surrounded by a beautiful mix of changing deciduous trees and evergreens.

Biking the Historic Highway: The Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail is a paved, car-free path that offers cyclists incredible views of the Gorge and its waterfalls. It’s a beautifully preserved piece of history that doubles as a world-class scenic ride.

As the fall season brings its annual, breathtaking display, North America offers a wealth of unforgettable outdoor experiences. Whether you prefer the classic charm of New England, the serene beauty of the Smoky Mountains, the majestic views of the Canadian Rockies, or the dramatic contrasts of the Pacific Northwest, each destination provides a unique canvas of color. This season is an invitation to get outside, find your trail, and create lasting memories.
